Walking in your Inheritance

May we all value the inheritance He has given to each one of us. Don’t get into the frame of mind that thinks that God blesses others and not ourselves. He is no respecter of persons! Draw on your Godly inheritance and walk in it!

The Bible has much to say about inheritance, whether from the Lord, from benefactors, or from sheer accident. We will briefly focus on the former because the inheritance God gives us is the most crucial, the most valuable, and the most enduring.

Ephesians is one of many New Testament Books who dwell on the issue of inheritance, saying that we have obtained an inheritance from Christ (Eph. 1.11), that it is sealed in us by the Holy Spirit (1.13-14), and that we are to know that we even have an inheritance (1.18). The order is very fitting: firstly knowing its source; secondly knowing how we got it; and thirdly that we should not be ignorant of it. Unfortunately, it is too often the case that God’s people do not fully comprehend that we have such a great inheritance and what it means for us.

We are to embrace this Godly inheritance, receive it, esteem it highly, and walk in it on a daily basis. Some of us might even need to recover this inheritance, once we realize that we are meant to walk in victory, confidence, self-esteem, and not in defeat. Always being at odds with the world, with those around about us, and constantly wallowing in self pity and negativity is never supposed to be the disposition of the Christian.

We should therefore be on the lookout to avoid old bad habits, old emotional pitfalls, old prejudices, old negative behaviours, and always revisiting or dwelling on the failures of yesteryear. These only serve to cripple and crush the victorious Christian life. We should take our cue from many Bible characters, starting with Moses, who drew on the inheritance given to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when leading the Israelites out of captivity (Ex.3.13-15). This inheritance was made very clear to him by the Lord at the burning bush (Ex. 3.3-6) thereby providing both the basis and the means by which Moses would achieve the impossible. The same might also be said of many other Bible characters such as Joshua, Elijah, David, Solomon, and the like.

Therefore, never think, dwell and live beneath your inheritance. And be aware that your failure to live and walk in this inheritance can also have its negative fallout on others. There are some clues, or indicators, that we are walking in this Godly inheritance when we exhibit such characteristics as follows: 1. having a positive outlook on life; 2. loving the Lord and serving the lord every day of your life; 3. thinking well of yourself, accepting how God has made you and the gifts and talents He has given you; 4. being free of vices, addictions, emotional upheaval, and repetitive sinful behavior; and 5. knowing who you are in God.

May we all value the inheritance He has given to each one of us. Don’t get into the frame of mind that thinks that God blesses others and not ourselves. He is no respecter of persons! Draw on your Godly inheritance and walk in it!
