Hold on to Jesus!

After trawling through the English Concordance, it is soon very apparent that the Bible says a lot about “holding on” to the Lord. Lets take just one Bible Book as an example; Hebrews.

Hold on … Hold on … to Jesus: The “Big Five” of Hebrews

Dr D

Recently we have been introduced to a new song, of Zulu origin, called “Bambalela,” which means “Hold on” in English.  What impressed the Logos College Ministry Team in South Africa was the “spirit” in which they sang it - vocalizing it loudly, dancing to its tune, and really believing it … some having tears in their eyes.

Since then, we have had a look into the Bible to find out more about these two profound words. After trawling through the English Concordance, it was soon very apparent that the Bible says a lot about “holding on” to the Lord.  A small portion of it will be shared here, though we encourage you to engage in your own search … you will be surprised with what you will find.

I will select just one Bible Book as an example, Hebrews. This General letter, written to a group of Christians scattered abroad, provides “The Big Five” (another African saying depicting its 5 biggest animals) of holding on. They are:

1. Hold on to our Confidence (Heb.3.1-6). If we hold on to our confidence in God, trusting Him and clinging to him, the scripture promises that we will possess a “spiritual house.”

2. Hold on right through to the End (Heb. 3.14). This scripture warns us not to become hardened by sin, and to make sure we encourage one another. It then promises that we will truly be “partakers of Christ.”

3. Hold on to our Confession (Heb.4.14-16). If we truly hold on to our belief in Christ, and live the Christian life, this scripture promises that we will “receive mercy and grace in time of need.”

4. Hold on to the Hope set before us (Heb.6.18). There are a lot of false hopes and promises in this world, which in the end amount to nothing and lead to nowhere. But as we hope in a future with Christ, this scripture promises us that this hope will be “an anchor for your soul.”

5. Hold on to Jesus without wavering (Heb.10.23-24). We are to encourage each other with love and good works, never forsaking the assembling of ourselves together in a corporate way. This scripture promises that we will in turn be “encouraged and strengthened as the day of the Lord draws near.”

The Lord richly bless you as you “hold on” to Jesus in every way, whether in times of blessing or whether in challenging and tough times. If you Hold On to Him, He will Hold On to you.
