THE FIVE POST RESURRECTION WORDS OF THE LORD - Dr D

Based on the Book of Luke, there are five main post – resurrection words of the Lord, the first being via two angels speaking on behalf of the Lord, and the others through the direct words of the Lord Himself.

1. “Why do you seek the living One among the dead?” (Lk.24.5-8). The game had changed. This was no longer a prediction of a coming messiah, a helpless child born to human parents, a teacher or miracle worker amongst his people, or a suffering servant as Isaiah put it. The trouble is, people were still thinking past tense and had not moved on in their heart and attitude. Hence the words of the angels. Are we similarly consumed by the past?

2. “What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking? And they stood still, looking sad” (Lk.24.17). Dwelling on the past, guilt, suffering, failure, missed opportunities, etc, can produce a lot of sadness. Jesus is right in the middle of them, but the scripture says “their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him” (v.16). That’s what happens when we take our focus off Jesus.

3. “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe …” (Lk.24.25-27). This takes the process a little further; wrong thinking is frequently the result of wrong believing. Believing wrong can cause a lot of confusion, as is apparent from the conversation between these two men on the road to Emmaus. If we habitually fall into confusion, maybe there is something wrong with our believing. Faith and believing must lie at the very core of the Christian life.

4. “Why are you troubled … See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself” (Lk.24.36-39). Faith is the substance of things hoped for (Heb.11.1). The resurrected Jesus is not just some ephemeral spirit floating to and fro; He is substance in every way. So must our faith and Christian life be. He wants our life to be complete just like He is complete, tangible, practical and real.

5. “ …. You are witnesses of all these things, and behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you …” (Lk.24.44-49). Finally, Jesus fulfilled His mission, and so must we. And this will take all the power of the Holy Spirit on our lives to do so!

The Lord bless you during this holy season in which we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord.
